There are three specific signals designated as high definition and they are 1080p, 1080i, and 720p.
Now the real definition comes from the pixels within the television. If the television does not have a pixel resolution of 1280x720 or 1920x1080, then it will not have the capabilities of giving the true representation of true pixel for pixel.
